National Geographic Update

I just got a nice call from the National Geographic HQ! They asked that I take down The Experimental Generation from YouTube because I, by submitting it to the contest, had transferred broadcast rights, so I happily obliged. Anything to keep me from getting kicked out of the contest.

We also had a brief discussion related to some of the illegitimate voting practices, and they are actually more on top of the ball than I had given them credit for. She outlined two basic ways they could’ve done the voting, by IP address or by cookies. IP address would obviously be better because it’s much harder to get around, but it’s a college competition, and there’s a good chance that by only allowing one IP address, you could conceivably block out a whole computer lab, allowing it only one vote.

So cookies was the better way to go, I’ll admit, but not without its flaws and people to exploit them. I tried to be nice and thank her a lot and tell her I appreciated her and I’d be sending her bouquets upon buoquets of flowers…

Well, sort of. She said they’d print out the data Monday night and look over it and if the IP address became too large a problem, then they might have the judges decide both 1st and 2nd place, if it had to come down to that. I know this is a solution I’ve talked to some of you about, and I think it is a wise one at this point in time.

She’s working late though, it’s 8 o’clock over thar on the East Coast!

Anywho, she said we’d be talking again next week to finish sorting this stuff out.

I’m much more at ease now, so everything’s gravy.
