Top 52 Movies of 2007

These two limelight behemoths lit up the box-office this year, combining for 8 of the 52 weekend winners.

I went over to Box Office Mojo just out of curiosity to see what were the 52 top movies of the year last year. Now, this doesn’t mean necessarily the best, but really the ones that beat out the competition on any given weekend. For one, I wonder how many of them I saw. Another reason is to see if there could conceivably be movies that won their weekends but have already, not more than a year later, faded into memory. Lastly, we all know bad movies can be #1 movies, even if only for a week, but using my subjective scale of quality, I want to see what time of year bad movies reign supreme…

So, without any further ado, a scaled down list from Box Office Mojo (click for more details). Mine is just chronological in order of weekends, and they are in bold if I saw them.

  1. Night at the Museum - I saw it, it was kinda funny.
  2. Stomp the Yard
  3. Stomp the Yard
  4. Epic Movie
  5. The Messengers
  6. Norbit
  7. Ghost Rider - This was Nicolas Cage’s break-out movie. He is now a full-fledged star.
  8. Ghost Rider
  9. Wild Hogs - I thought it was very amusing. John Travolta is king.
  10. 300 - Oh yeah.
  11. 300
  12. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
  13. Blades of Glory - Rental, slightly amusing.
  14. Blades of Glory
  15. Disturbia - With the huge crowd, it became fun.
  16. Disturbia
  17. Disturbia
  18. Spider-Man 3
  19. Spider-Man 3
  20. Shrek the Third - Can’t wait for 4 and 5!
  21. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End - Action-y.
  22. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
  23. Ocean’s Thirteen
  24. Fantastic Four 2
  25. Evan Almighty
  26. Ratatouille - Perfect.

  29. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry - Bad.
  30. The Simpsons Movie - A long, fulfilling episode.
  31. The Bourne Ultimatum - As good as 300?!
  32. Rush Hour 3
  33. Superbad - Funnnnyyy.
  34. Superbad

  36. 3:10 to Yuma (2007) - Yeehaw.

  38. Resident Evil: Extinction
  39. The Game Plan
  40. The Game Plan
  41. Why Did I Get Married
  42. 30 Days of Night - What a great premise, but that’s it.
  43. Saw IV
  44. American Gangster - Let-down.
  45. Bee Movie - Too many puns, but I enjoyed it.
  46. Beowulf - Who needs story when you have THREE-DIMENSIONS.
  47. Enchanted
  48. Enchanted
  49. The Golden Compass
  50. I am Legend - Swell.
  51. National Treasure: Book of Secrets - I couldn’t resist.
  52. National Treasure: Book of Secrets

41 movies took the 52 weekends, and I saw 22 of them. I believe only Ratatouille got any sort of Academy Award? I think Wild Hogs had a couple best actor nominations, but that’s about it.

Anyway, there are all sorts of thoughts bouncing around in this post that I didn’t really flesh out, and I don’t think I will. This is more of a “look! something interesting! think about it!” kind of thing. Like, Ghost Rider can win back-to-back weekends but Juno can’t win at all. Or even washed-up actors like Eddie Murphy still have enough sway with audiences to win a weekend in January, but you need a Will Smith to close it out in December.

Any thoughts on your behalf? Thoughts besides why this is coming out in May when 2007 was 5 months ago?

Haven’t seen too many new releases from 2007 but you HAVE to get a big, fun group together for a Spider-Man 3 screening. Funniest movie in recent memory, up there with Superbad.

I have no idea how it made it out of the studio.
