For those of you who think I waste my time at resTV just answering e-mails and reading books, you’re way off.

I also (as of today) started wasting time on Craigslist.

Per the norm, I found myself once again browsing through sections related to editing, writing, and filming. My process is to open any ads that look promising and narrow down from there. I brought the total down to three… and that is how I spent tonight.

The first was an offer for $50 AND lunch (that could be anywhere between $6 and $12 additional!) for a student to edit an actor’s reel together.

The second was an offer for $500 to shoot a wedding in a few weeks. Five hours, not too much stress, they just want footage. That’d be pretty sweet!

The third, as is true to the rule of three, was thusly entitled: Narrator Needed For 13 Web ‘Interstitials’. They go on to ask for “a non-union, male, Los Angeles-based voice-over talent to provide narration”… with a “younger-sounding, assured, conversational type of voice to carry the segments”.

Is that me or what?! I have never felt such a strong calling before, so if you’ll be so kind as to click the picture above, you can watch me give my all.

In other news, I had slice of blackberry pie for lunch and a lslice of peach pie for dinner.

A couple months ago Camille and I partook in some shenanigans. I had some extra dinosaurs and didn’t want to keep taking them with me everywhere, so we decided to donate them to the world.

For each dinosaur we created a card, a story about who s/he was and what kind of situation they were in. These ranged from absurd (”hey man, I’m JP. I love poppin’ and lockin and break dancing and hip hop. I mean, seriously, just turn on some music and I go nuts. I’m great to bring to parties. All the ladies dig me.” … “hey! look at me! hey ! hi! pay attention to me! I have add and am in desperate need of some ATTENTION. Please take me and shower me with love, kindness and attention!” … “my mama used to love me, but when I broke her favorite flatscreen television she kicked me out of the house and i haven’t watched TV in months! please take me to your house! i miss the hills”)

…to sympathetic (”meteors killed my family. i am sad. please give me a new home.” … “i have a rare disease, three fingeritis, and I have been in and out of hospitals for years. I’m sick of it. I just want a peaceful home Will you take me?” … “my name is willis. both my parents died in the tar pits. i like leafy greens and peanut butter. i hope you like long walks cause i need to be walked often. i won’t bite!”)…

Then one night we took them all out and set them up, eager to let them out into the world and hoping they would find loving owners (who would be proactive enough to take pictures and write us e-mails on how the dinos were doing in their new homes).

Just wanted to let you know that I found a home today!
Some really big dude adopted me and brought me to his office. I love it here. Everything is green, just like me. And I have already made a lot of friends.
There’s an alligator, a fish, a frog and a bear. And so far, they all seem very nice and have made me feel very welcome.

Gotta go now. Time for me to explore more of my new home.

Mark (the dino)

We’ll never forget you!

It’s J.P.! The lovable dino that loves poppin’ and lockin’ and bustin’ moves! He found a home!

This big guy was one of my favorites, and it was hard to let him go. We left him by the Inverted Fountain at South Campus and hoped for the best. I will let the note speak for itself.

Dear Whomever,

Just wanted to let you know what happened to the dino.

I teach writing at UCLA. I had arranged for 33 4th grade students to come to campus today to interview my students about writing.

Last week, one of the 4th graders, a high-functioning autistic boy, flipped out, screaming he couldn’t, wouldn’t, absolutely no way to go to UCLA! When the 4th graders’ teacher told me Max wasn’t coming, I had to reassign my student who was going to interview him to join another 4th grader. Yesterday I found out that Max had changed his mind. He was coming to campus, but didn’t want to interview anyone, just wanted to go on the tour part of the visit.

On the way to campus I realized something horrible. My students had decided that they would each get a little gift to give to the 4th graders. Max, having no partner, would get no gift. I felt terrible. I had no time to run to the student store to get something. I was trying to remember if there wa anything in my office I could give him. As I walked past the inverted fountain to my office in the Humanities building, still fretting about what to do, I saw something…

…a little dinosaur. And Max had his gift.

When all the other kids walked out of their interviews holding their stuffed bears, baseball caps, journals, t-shirts (and two 4th graders received footballs signed by the UCLA football team!), I handed Max his gift.

Thank you for brightening the day of a young boy who struggles so hard to get through his life.

I still remember the day, early May. How could I forget?

How could anyone forget?

It was just a group of great friends trying to take a short-cut… I was just testing out Steak-Ums, my new camera. Then it happened.

It was all I could do just to keep filming, just to keep seeing… I don’t know what I would’ve done otherwise.

It’s taken me this long to post it because I never really got over Ali. It was just too hard, I think, to even go back and look at what happened, look at the footage. For those of you who were there, I know your pain.

If you haven’t tried this before, it’s fun and unsafe! Get up to cruising speed, stick your hand out the window and you can keep a penny balanced on it. Naturally, I was the only one in the car when I took this picture, so one hand is for the penny, one hand for the cameraphone, and one hand for the steering well. When the Hands Free rule went into effect, I thought they wanted us to drive Hands Free!
Been a few days since I updated, not much going on. Stopped home for the weekend to cook for the parents, watch a few movies, and catch up with some friends I hadn’t gotten quality time with in a few years. Talks with them, amusingly enough, always ended up being about girls, despite all their worldwide travels.
But worldwide travels is what I want to talk about!
As the avid readers now know, film school was a bust, so that opens up new windows for traveling. I can’t this year because of cec, but next summer and next year are wide open for gettin’ out. I just signed up for classes (four Spanish… possibly one small film one, pending a petition… how’d you guys do?), and it turns out I need 17 classes over the next 6 quarters of school.
That’s less than three a quarter, or if I take 20 units this quarter, I only need four of the next six quarters to finish major and minor… or only one quarter senior year
I’m not sure quite what this means yet. The options available include a semester abroad studying, or smaller increments… but I don’t have the need for those units, and for that money I could do a lot more. What tantalizes me now is the possibility of six countries in six months, finding a program that would allow me to do a month of service work in a place, then move onward to a new place and work some more? This could be a good way to explore several different countries in South America to go with this brand new Spanish major…
Despite having been to a number of other countries, I still find myself needing my own adventure. I was listening to a friend who’ll be going to Tokyo for 13 months while simultaneously thinking about the night before with the friend who had, in the past year, gone to London, Dublin and Sydney… all while playing with the top that Conor graciously got for me in Guatemala…
Lots of people going lots of places, some with unique stories, others going to run-of-the-mill study-abroad programs. What will I do?

Found out this morning that I didn’t get into the film school, but whatevs, right?

I mean, it would’ve been cool to be the first person in my family to go to (art) college, but whatevs, right?

Whatevs.

I just talked to friend and filmmaker Kelly Li, and unbelievably he also didn’t get in. We worked at resTV together, his short film got screened on Virgin Airlines… it’s hard to believe that the film school actually knows what they’re doing, but anyway, we were talking and we know there’s no way we’re letting this bump in the tracks derail us from our future. It’s just… the school is for people who need direction/guidance. Kelly, myself, and a few others I know have this already, and I would even venture to say we’re not looking back anymore.

To those that got in or are in already, I wish you continued luck and success, I’m here for you if you want help on any projects as I’ll probably be bugging you for help, too.

All in all, there’s just too many possibilities for the future, too many projects, too many ideas and too many dreams to sit and dwell upon what a few people from the film school think of us.
